Dr. Stine Jensen (1972, Denmark) is a literary theorist and philosopher. In 2002, she received her PhD degree in the field of arts and culture from the University of Maastricht. She held a position at the Radboud University of Nijmegen as an assistant professor in television studies from 2002-2004. Currently she works as a university lecturer in literary studies as part of the Faculty of Arts at the Free University of Amsterdam ( www.let.vu.nl ). She teaches courses on aesthetics, popular culture and the relation between arts and society. She is also the contact person for internationalisation, and in this function, she set up an exchange program between the Free University of Amsterdam and the Bosporus University in Istanbul.
She is the author of De verlangenmachine. Vrouwen in de popmuziek (Desiremachine. Women in Pop Music, Prometheus 2001), Waarom vrouwen van apen houden. Een liefdesgeschiedenis in cultuur en wetenschap (Why women love apes. A love affair in science and culture, Bert Bakker 2002, to be published in French at Seuil in 2006), and edited Aapverhalen (Ape stories, Wereldbibliotheek 2004). In June, her book Turkse vlinders. Liefde tussen twee culturen will be published (Prometheus 2005). Turkish Butterflies. Love between two cultures is a personal and journalistic investigation into the choices of female and male thirty-somethings, emigrating Europeans who have lost their hearts to Turkey, Turks who are dreaming of a life in Europe and the difficulties and pleasures of intercultural love
Stine Jensen combines her academic work with a variety of journalistic activities. She is a literary critic for the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad in British fiction and non-fiction and writes articles on film, popular culture and literature for NRC Handelsblad. She has a three-monthly book section in La Vie en Rose , a Dutch women's magazine, and published essays in a number of magazines, such as De Gids, Armada, Biografie Bulletin, Hollands Maandblad, Marie Claire en Filosofie Magazine . Recurring themes in her work are masculinity, femininity, multiculturalism, ethnicity, love and sexuality. She is an editor of the literary journal for world literature, Armada . Tijdschrift voor wereldliteratuur. Occasionally she is a guest in the popular Dutch radio show ‘ Desmet Live ' in which she discusses a variety of topics in the field of culture and politics ( www.desmetlive.nl ). Also, she is an advisor of Stimuleringsfonds Culturele Omroepproducties, a Dutch cultural governmental organization that subsidizes cultural television programmes. And she is a columnist at the NRC Handelsblad.
In December 2004, in a special edition of the Dutch newsmagazine Vrij Nederland , Stine Jensen was chosen as one of the best and most promising young philosophers of the Netherlands.
