Dutch literature is filled with apes in all sorts and sizes. Because it resembles human beings so closely, the ape is one of the most fascinating creatures of the animal kingdom. Usually, the ape is considered lower than a human being, but more often is functions as a mirror for human behaviour.
In Ape stories, Stine Jensen has collected old and new stories from Dutch authors such as Arnon Grunberg, Abdelkader Benali and Willem Frederik Hermans, in which dangerous, crazy, horny, playful and wise apes play a major role. They drink, make love, fight and inspire to philosophize about the deepest and most essential questions of life: who am I, where am I from and how to live?
